an introduction
DICOMJet is a software solution
allowing to turn any Windows-based Personal Computer with a connected
printer into a DICOM Print Server. DICOMJet allows
connecting the PC to a DICOM network and handling the print requests
coming from DICOM-compliant devices: it acts as a "translator"
between the DICOM world and the Windows printers' world, by forwarding
to these printers the printing requests coming from digital modalities,
appropriately converted.

DICOMJet allows obtaining a low-cost DICOM printing solution,
exploiting common hardware devices such as a Personal Computer
and Windows-compatible printer. In particular, today's ink-jet,
laser or solid-ink printers offer interesting possibilities: they
are able to print high quality images on transparent films (in
addition to several types of paper) that look very similar to
the traditional radiographic film.
DICOMJet also allows saving the images transferred
through the DICOM Print request to the the local disks of the
PC where the software is running, in BMP, JPEG, TIFF or
PNG format.

DICOMJet is able to handle several printers for each
PC, both local and remote. It offers various configuration
possibilities for forwarding the print jobs
to the connected printers: for instance, it is possible to setup
rules to determine the destination printer based on the medium
type requested by the DICOM modality. If several printers are
available and match the rules set, a sophisticated load balancing
algorithm is used in order to distribute the workload.
DICOMJet is able to accept and manage up to 10 concurrent
DICOM associations, thus enabling to serve the printing
requests of a medium-sized DICOM network with just one PC and
one or more Windows printers.
DICOMJet is now able to run both as a normal Windows user application
and as a Windows service, enabling a completely
unattended operational mode.
